Keauhou Canoe Club awarded its annual college scholarships to two high school seniors who are West Hawaii paddlers.
The James F. Rogers Memorial Scholarship for academic excellence for $1,000 was awarded to Sean Duim. who is completing his studies at Kamehameha-Oahu. Duim plans to study business and real estate at the University of Northern Colorado in the fall.
The Mike Haines Memorial Scholarship for leadership and community service for $1,000 was awarded to Cameron “Kalama” Freitas from Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino High School. Freitas will be studying Hawaiian language and culture at either the University of Hawaii or West Hawaii Community College in the fall.
Canoe club members support these scholarships with donations each year. This is the first time in six years of awarding scholarships that both recipients also paddled for Keauhou Canoe Club during their paddling careers. The presentation ceremonies will be coordinated with these young men and proud families.
Kohala seeks volleyball,
basketball coaches
Kohala High School is currently seeking applicants for head girls volleyball coach and head girls varsity basketball coach for the 2013-2014 seasons.
Interested persons may pick up and submit an application at the main high school office. Deadline to apply is Wednesday.

starts Thursday
Spring football for Keaau High will begin Thursday, with sessions running from 3 to 6 p.m. daily.
Those wanting to participate must have a valid physical examination form on file in the school’s athletics office. Proper attire includes shorts, T-shirts, cleats and running shoes.

Roller derby
bout Saturday
at Kekuaokalani Gym
The Kona Outlaw Roller Girls will take on the Waimea Wranglers in a roller derby bout at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
General admission tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door ($2 in advance, $5 at the door for children age 10 and under). Tickets are available at Alii Buzz, Josie’s Salon and Hustle Clothing.
Skye Storm and the Bachelor Auction Dancers will provide halftime entertainment, and the event also offers concession stands. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Hawaii Cycling Club time trial Saturday
HCC will hold the Upolu Airport training time trial on Saturday. The time trial starts at Maluokalani Street in Kawaihae and finishes 16 miles north at the Upolu Airport Road sign.
Registration will be on Maluokalani Street from 7 to 7:40 a.m.. The prerace meeting will be at 7:50 a.m. near the start line. The talk story/aid station will be directly across the road from the finish line.

Papa Kimitete Regatta May 18 in Kailua-Kona
The Kai Ehitu Outrigger Team will host the Papa Kimitete Regatta at 8 a.m. May 18 at Kailua Pier.
The regatta, which kicks off the Moku O Hawaii Outrigger Canoe Racing Association season, offers food booths, craft vendors, silent auctions and raffles.

Physical exam screenings
at Keaau High
Keaau High will offer physical examination screenings for all high school and middle school athletes from 2 to 5 p.m. May 15 in its high school gym.
Students must bring completed physical examination forms to the screenings, which will cover athletic participation for the entire 2013-14 season. Adults must accompany students under the age of 14.
Forms are available at any high school athletics office, and the cost for the screenings is $25.

Pueo golf
tournament May 19
Pueo, a Waimea-based Hawaii Kupuna Softball League team, will host its annual fundraising golf tournament at 7:30 a.m. May 19 at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.

College-prep hoops camp June 3-7
Hawaii Island Hoops will hold its college-prep basketball camp June 3-7 at the Kekuaokalani Gym. Registration is ongoing. The camp includes Nike SPARQ Training, daily fundamental training workouts, shooting clinics, defensive breakdowns, team offense, individual skills competitions, team tournament and championship game. There will also be a 3-point shootout, free-throw and slam dunk contests, all-star games and awards ceremony.
The camp is open to boys ages 13-19 who are looking to improve their skills and learn a college-style program. The registration fee is $350 and includes instruction from NCAA, NAIA and junior college players and coaches, and evening college-prep seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment. All meals are included in the registration fee.

Beginner golf
classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning May 18.
The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf. Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

HIBT fishes
for volunteers
The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is looking for more than 50 volunteers to help with the running of the 54th annual tournament. A variety of tournament support is needed, including Kailua Pier operations, HIBT retail store, administration and a whole lot more. Each volunteer will receive a HIBT T-shirt and discounted parking for shift volunteers. Positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
HIBT event headquarters, retail and tournament control will once again be anchored at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, located adjacent to Kailua Pier. Tournament volunteers are needed from July 21 through August 13.

Big Island speed
camp June 6-7
Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross-country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 6 and 7.
The clinic will begin at 10 a.m. both days, with clinic-day registration at 9 a.m. June 6.
The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days. Runners who register before Friday receive a $10 discount.

Mauna Kea
pro-am July 1-5
Mauna Kea Golf Course will host its 40th annual pro-am tournament July 1-5. The total cash purse prize for pro golfers is $10,000.
Entries are limited to the first 26 paid teams by May 25. Tournament entry fees are $8,700 per team of four or $2,900 per amateur. Entry fees include dinner functions (spouses included), amenity tournament gifts and prizes, and green and cart fees for two practice and three tournament rounds.
Special room rates for registered amateur players begin at $299 per night in a Mountain View category room at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Rates include complimentary daily breakfast for two. Golf professional rooms are complimentary for Monday through Friday nights.
Practice rounds will be July 1 and 2, and tournament play will begin July 3.
